Spirit portrait drawn of young Matey
Matey started working with the circle when we lived in Norfolk and refused to tell us his name, so he was called Matey from then on. A few years later he told us his real name was Sydney Gates but by then it did not seem right to call him anything other than Matey.
He was an urchin who lived near the River Thames. He used to catch rats and was given money for their tails and he made necklaces out of their teeth.
